Meetings and Research

So we had another meeting with the director and animator yesterday evening to come to a better grasp of what style of soundtrack he was after.

He compared his animation style to that of Fairly Odd Parents and Dexters Lab so we decided to study the soundtrack in these two animations to get a further understanding of the type of sounds that would be heard in the animation.

Fairly Odd Parents Episode Example

We notice that a lot of the movements from characters are exaggerated through sound, including blinking, rapid arm and leg movements and sometimes even facial expressions such as looking surprised and getting an idea.

The key difference between these cartoons and Brett’s is that there is no dialogue in Brett’s. This meant the sound of the characters and their environments would need to be stronger than ever and have a solid backing track to make the cartoon flow. With this in mind we decided to study cartoons with no dialogue, in particular ‘Road Runner and Coyote’ from Looney Toons.

These show great examples of the characters actions and environments being backed up by sound, with a soundtrack that fits the situation accordingly.

It’s a mixture of these two styles that we plan to implement in to the animation we are working on.

Next week we will finally be able to get our hands on the finished animation (by finished I mean its the animation as it would be from start to finish, certain scenes haven’t been finalised in the way of graphics and edits yet.) so we can start putting our SFX and Soundtracks in place and working on drafts to send back to the animator!
